RCSI Heritage Collections are located on the 3rd floor of the old Mercer Hospital on Mercer Street Lower, Dublin 2



In response to the challenges presented by COVID-19, public access to RCSI Heritage Collections is suspended until further notice. This is part of a university-wide effort to minimise the risk of cross-contamination.

Heritage Collections staff are happy to support research queries by email as far as possible.


The entrance is via the black gates on Noel Purcell Walk, around the corner from RCSI buildings on York Street. At the gates, ring the bell for security and identify yourself as a visitor to Heritage Collections. When inside, proceed to the Mercer Building where security will welcome you in the reception. The Widdess Reading Room will be open every Thursday from 10am-1pm and 2pm-4.30pm. To view any records held by the RCSI Heritage Collections an appointment must be made in advance by emailing . This email must be accompanied by the reference numbers and/or title of the collections you wish to consult and the date and time you wish to visit.


Researchers please be aware of the following Reading Room guidelines:

  • Please note that appointments must be confirmed by staff prior to visit.
  • Researchers must complete and return the RCSI Heritage Collections Research Application Form (PDF 132KB) before or on the day of their visit accompanied by a valid form of identification. 
  • The Reading Room is open from 10am-1pm and 2pm-4.30pm.
  • No food or liquids are permitted under any circumstance.
  • Pencil, paper and personal electronic devices can be used in the reading room. No other writing materials are permitted.
  • Photocopying of certain material may be permitted and must be carried out by Heritage Collections staff only.
  • The use of photographic equipment without flash is permitted under agreed and signed terms.
  • High quality productions of digitised material may be purchased from the Heritage Collections for publication RCSI Heritage Collections Imaging Agreement Form for Publication (PDF 92KB).   • Copyright protection must be adhered to. Please refer to Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000 (PDF 614KB)
  • Appropriate handling of the material is expected and will be demonstrated when necessary.
  • Material must be returned to the Heritage Collections in the same condition and order it was issued.
  • No items from the collections are to be removed from the reading room at any time.
  • Uncatalogued collections will not be available to researchers. This is standard policy.
