The Library in 26 York Street has introduced icons to indicate what noise is acceptable in core library spaces. 

1. Collaborate Icon: Talking, meeting, phone conversations permitted e.g. Library Learning Commons, Ground Floor, 26 York Street and all Group Study Rooms (Levels 1 & 2) and the Amphitheatre (Level 2). There is also a Collaborative Zone on Level 2 which switches between the Collaborate & Silent icons - check the doors when entering to see which icon it is displaying. 

2. Quiet Icon: Short whispered conversations are permitted e.g. Reading Lounge, Level 1, 26 York Street and the Computer Room, Level 1, 26 York Street. 

3. Silent Icon: No talking, whispering or noise of any kind permitted e.g. Silent Study Zone, Level 2, 26 York Street and the Collaborative Zone, Level 2, 26 York Street when the silent icon is on display.  

4. Library and security staff may ask individuals or groups making noise to produce their ID card(s).

3. If you are asked for your ID card you may be reported to the Director Library Services or to the Vice Dean of Student Affairs for appropriate action.

5. Library and security staff may, at their discretion, ask you to be quiet, to move or to move elsewhere. Failure to comply with library and security staff requests will be reported to the Director Library Services or Vice Dean.

Any student who is being disturbed by noise should report their issue and location, at the time of the disturbance, to library staff or email 

Disciplinary action for library users transgressing these policies 

Library and security staff may ask offending students to produce their ID card. Their name and number will be recorded and forwarded to the Director Library Services. If their name is reported three times they will be requested to meet with the Vice Dean for Student Affairs. Post interview with the Vice Dean if their name is reported again their access to the Library will be suspended. Access will only be restored by appeal to the Vice Dean.
