CoMPPAS Educate programmes

CoMPPAS Educate provides a range of academic and pre-service professional development learning opportunities designed to provide students with the skills, insights and awareness they need to maximise their chances of success in College and in their clinical learning environments.

The focus is on enhancing skills and performance through relevant supplemental learning and the development of complementary and enabling competencies to RCSI formal instruction and clinical training. These programmes are integral to RCSI curricular outcomes.

A key concept in the provision of these programmes is the RCSI student as the producer of the resources developed to support and enhance the achievement of their academic and professional goals.

RCSI Enhance

RCSI Enhance

RCSI Enhance seeks to complement formal instruction and training through the further development and enhancement of critical personal, academic and professional competencies necessary for effective transition and optimal performance in the clinical training component of RCSI healthcare programmes.

This programme is currently under development for the coming academic year. A detailed schedule with dates and times will be published once finalised. Please also check the CoMPPAS Moodle calendar regularly for details of scheduled activities.

RCSI GROW is an academic and clinical performance management initiative of RCSI academic and clinical tutoring service administered through CoMPASS. Drawing on assessment data and other performance related feedback, RCSI academic staff engage pro-actively and collaboratively with students in relation to the management and enhancement of their academic and professional performance.

Focusing on continuous growth and learning as a core requirement of the healthcare professions, RCSI GROW employs the GROW coaching model to facilitate students in recovering their performance or moving it to the next level.

The model involves:

  • Goal setting
  • Reality checking-current situation
  • Obstacles and Options and alternative strategies
  • What to do, when, whom and the will to do it

The GROW approach provides the student with the opportunity to reflect, evaluate and identify where they may benefit from the academic and professional expertise of RCSI staff to facilitate a just-in-time intervention and to empower students in developing and leading their personal progression plan.

Peer teaching and mentoring

The mission of CoMPPAS is to nurture and develop our students. Our mentoring and tutoring programmes are designed to do both. New students entering college that actively engage with our orientation and mentoring programme will be assisted with integrating into College life. Students that feel part of and supported by the RCSI community are more likely to succeed in their chosen course. We also realise that mentoring, communication and working as a team are skills that all our future healthcare professionals will be required to demonstrate competency in on graduation. We realise that it is important as an organisation that we offer our students opportunities to develop these skills.

The peer-led teaching and mentoring programmes are an ideal way for students in all years to network, develop their skills in public speaking, teamwork, leadership and communication. This opportunity is also a route to obtaining key selling points for inclusion in personal statements and CVs.

There are various roles and certification levels available to students as part of these programmes depending on the amount of time and commitment that each student has available to them. Certified training, appropriate to each level is offered to each member of the peer-led teaching and mentoring team.

  • Level 2 – Acting as a student mentor for an assigned small group of students throughout the academic year Involvement in production of Student to Student Guides Involvement in Video clip production
