15 PhD positions available in Genomics Data Science

We are seeking applications for 15 PhD positions at a new SFI Centre for Research Training focused on Genomics Data Science. This is a structured, 4-year cohort-based PhD programme. For the first four months, all 15 students will be accommodated on the NUI Galway campus. They will undertake an intensive series of short workshops, presented by leading experts in their fields. At the end of this residential training programme students choose projects and relocate to the partner university at which their research project will commence. Projects can be chosen from over 70 supervisors based across NUI Galway, UCC, UCD, TCD and RCSI.

Methods, frameworks and infrastructure development for genomics
Genomics of common and rare diseases
Cancer genomics and precision medicine
Agrigenomics, smart food and nutrigenomics
Genomics for pathogen surveillance and control
Biotechnological genomics, including metagenomics
High-resolution population genomics

Eligibility criteria


  • An Honours Bachelor degree (grade 2.1 or above) in molecular biological sciences or in a strongly numerate or computational field (computer science, engineering, physics, statistics, mathematics)
  • A strong aptitude for programming and data analysis.
  • Good communication skills
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills
  • Ability to work on one’s own initiative as well as in a multidisciplinary, team environment
  • Applicants will need to demonstrate competence in written and spoken English and have IELTS or equivalent of 6.5 or above.
