Adherence to inhaled therapies

Frank Doyle, Psychology. Keywords: respiratory diseases, inhaled therapy, adherence, behaviour change.

Inhaled therapies are a cornerstone of treatments for common conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. However, adherence to such therapy is known to be low and research has shown that such non-adherence can be both accidental and deliberate. The Inhaler Compliance Aid is unique in that it can identify not only when a patient takes their inhaler, but whether they have taken it correctly. This device therefore provides significant opportunities for individualised interventions. The present project will investigate psychosocial factors influencing adherence, and provide tailored behaviour change interventions to individuals.
