Specialist Training (ST3 - ST8)

Applications to Specialist Training are now closed for 2018 for commencment on programme in July 2019.

The information below is relevant to 2018 and may update for 2019.  Our intake for July 2020 will open at the end of October 2019, please check this site for updates closer to the time.  

All applicants will be assessed against each other for a limited number of reserve places.

Each Surgical Specialty will be involved in the pre-scoring of these applications and may undertake a shortlisting of applicants prior to interview.

As there are a limited number of places in specialty programmes, entry to each Specialty is competitive. RCSI works in collaboration with the HSE/NDTP, to determine appointment numbers. This is subject to change year on year.

  • Eligibility for the Trainee Specialist Division 2019

    Application routes to Specialist Training in the Surgical Specialties are broken down as follows:

    • Equivalent Standards Route (ESR) - Generic
    • Equivalent Standards Route (ESR) - RCSI 
    • Equivalent Standards Route (Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery)
    • Ophthalmic Surgery

    Equivalent Standards Route (ESR)- Generic (for those who have not undertaken a RCSI Core or Basic Surgical Training Programme previously)

    Pathway Applications - Progressing ST2 to ST3 is now closed and will reopen in October 2019
