Research Electives

Participation in summer research electives is strongly encouraged throughout the Junior and Intermediate Cycles. Research electives are distinct from clinical electives in that the student will be involved in basic research, translational research or audits but will not directly participate in the clinical care of patients.

Clinical electives are restricted to students who have successfully completed SC1 / GEM3. There are many advantages of undertaking research electives. Firstly, a student will gain complementary experience that will enhance a CV. Secondly, the research may yield opportunities for conference presentations or publications, which will help distinguish students from peers. Thirdly, research electives can open doors for securing clinical electives in the same institution during Senior Cycle. The importance of this route cannot be underestimated for students planning residencies in the USA or Canada, as clinical electives can be difficult to source and personal contacts are frequently the key to success.
