National Surgical Training Centre

RCSI has successfully shaped and led the training of surgeons since its foundation.

Standards set by the College ensure that surgeons are trained to the highest possible level and that the high quality of surgical care expected of all trained surgeons is maintained and updated for as long as a surgeon remains in clinical practice.

The pathway to becoming a surgeon begins with the two year Basic Surgical Training Programme (BST) for medical graduates who have completed their internship and wish to pursue a career in surgery. This is followed by a number of years of Higher Surgical Training (HST)

At postgraduate level, RCSI provides recognised training at Basic and Higher Surgical levels for aspiring surgeons from Ireland and Overseas.

Examinations, including the (traditional) Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the newer membership of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, are organised and administered.
