Elvira Ares Mazás. B.Sc. in Pharmacy (1979), PhD in Parasitology (1985), more than 25 years of experience in several fields of Parasitology including epidemiology, clinical trials, clinical parasitology, molecular biology and methods for parasite disinfection. She lectured at USC (1985-1988) where she was promoted to Senior Lecturer in Parasitology in 1988 until now. She is coordinator of a multidisciplinary research group for diagnostic, treatment and investigation of infectious microorganisms with repercussion in food safety. Dra Ares-Mazás has published in more than 80 peer reviewed papers in internationally recognized journals. She has presented more than90 research works at international conferences and workshops. She has directed 7 PhD Thesis.

It has always been closely linked to Galician production sectors: food, agriculture,and fishing. It is greanted almost 40 million euros to support its research work:
   2/3 correspond to public finance (regional, national and European)    1/3 correspond to contracts with private companies.

Between 1988 and 2004, 110 patents were applied for and 59 of them have already been granted (the process takes two to four years).
