The University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) is education and knowledge at the service of society. It is a singular institution due to its history, the impressive settings of Compostela and Lugo, where its campuses are located, its dynamism and its commitment to modernisation. Founded in 1495 by Don Lope Gómez de Marzoa, this institution maintains one of most important academic traditions in Europe, being always attentive to the growing demands of society and open to international collaboration.The USC is one of the nine Spanish universities included in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (2004), compiledby the Shangai Jiao Tong University. Elvira Ares Mazás. B.Sc. in Pharmacy (1979), PhD in Parasitology (1985), more than 25 years of experience in several fields of Parasitology including epidemiology, clinical trials, clinical parasitology, molecular biology and methods for parasite disinfection. She lectured at USC (1985-1988) where she was promoted to Senior Lecturer in Parasitology in 1988 until now. She is coordinator of a multidisciplinary research group for diagnostic, treatment and investigation of infectious microorganisms with repercussion in food safety. Dra Ares-Mazás has published in more than 80 peer reviewed papers in internationally recognized journals. She has presented more than90 research works at international conferences and workshops. She has directed 7 PhD Thesis.
