School of Nursing

The School of Nursing in RCSI was established in July 2001 with an explicit aim of ensuring excellence in nurse education and training.

Mission of the School

To develop in students the necessary knowledge and skills of nursing and the related sciences to equip them to practice as a nurse

  • To facilitate the professional and personal development of the students
  • To promote learning as a lifelong process

The main objective of the school is to enable the student to become a caring, competent and accountable nurse.

Nurse Prescribing

In 2007 the Minister for Health and Children introduced legislation allowing nurses and midwives in certain circumstances and subject to certain criteria to be allowed prescriptive authority. In 2007 the first education programmes preparing nurses and midwives for this new role began at RCSI and to date we have offered 3 programmes per year beginning in January, April and October, funded by the HSE through the Office of the Nursing Services Director.
