Quality Enhancement Office
The Quality Enhancement Office (QEO) was established in October 2010 following the activation of the College's independent degree-awarding powers by the Minister for Education & Skills under the terms of the RCSI (Charters Amendment) Act 2003.
The role of the QEO, as the executive arm of the RCSI Quality Committee, is to support the implementation of the RCSI quality assurance/quality improvement (QA/QI) strategy by coordinating all relevant activities and by collecting the data needed to allow the College to continually assure and develop the quality of all aspects of programme delivery.
The primary activity of the QEO is the coordination of quality reviews. Quality reviews are a key component of the quality assurance measures introduced into the Irish higher education sector by the Universities Act 1997. Two types of quality review are involved:
[a] statutory Institutional Reviews of RCSI conducted periodically by independent international teams convened by the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland (NQAI);
[b] internal ‘rolling' reviews of Schools and non-academic (service) units within RCSI.
Other roles of the QEO include:
• supporting RCSI Schools & postgraduate Faculties in statutory accreditation processes undertaken by bodies such as the Irish Medical Council, the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland, the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists and An Bord Altranais (the Irish Nursing Board)
• supporting RCSI international campuses in local quality reviews and accreditation processes
• facilitating the activities of key working groups in the areas of assessment, evaluation, curriculum development and programme accreditation/validation
• institutional research and data collection
• bespoke internal QA audits
• external consultancy work
