Professor Ruairí Brugha joined the RCSI in 2005 as Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health Medicine. Having qualified as a medical doctor in 1980, he spent six years working in Africa in the 1980s and 90s; trained as a public health medicine specialist; and spent 10 years at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where he was Head of the Health Policy Unit and editor of Health Policy and Planning. He is Module Lead and lectures on the Public Health Epidemiology module in RCSI’s direct and graduate entry medicine programmes; and contributes to postgraduate teaching on health policy and systems on the SPHeRE structured PhD programme.

Ruairí’s research interest is in global and Irish health systems and policy, with a particular focus on health workforce research in Ireland and Africa. The RCSI health workforce research group, which he leads undertakes research on the patterns of migration of doctors into and out of Ireland. In the last five years, research he is leading is helping to generate new evidence on surgical systems and the surgical workforce in Africa, including the use of task shifting to meet essential surgical needs of district and rural populations.
