  Associate Professor of Biochemistry  

Biography: Professor Harmey is a graduate of University College Dublin (1986) and completed her PhD in Molecular Genetics there in 1990. She worked as a post-doctoral fellow in the University of Sussex and UCD before joining the Dept of Surgery at RCSI as a Senior Scientist in 1995. In 1999, she was a Visiting Scientist at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas holding fellowships from UICC (Union Internationale Contre le Cancer) and Royal Irish Academy. She joined MCT as Senior Lecturer in August 2006 and is an adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Houston since 2003. She moved on secondment to Perdana University- RCSI  2006 as Junior Cycle Director and Head of Biochemistry.  She returned to MCT, July 2017.

Research Areas: Angiogenesis and metastasis in breast cancer; 
IGF pathway as a therapeutic target in breast cancer 
Development of novel IGF inhibitors; 
Mechanisms of resistance to molecular therapies (eg Herceptin, Lapatanib)
and strategies to overcome or prevent resistance.
