Sunday, 2nd November 2008-RCSI/AIBs Race Against Breast Cancer 2008 Raises Over Eur545,000 for Breast Cancer Research

€545,000 was raised today  for breast cancer research  at the Royal College of Surgeons (RCSI)/AIB Annual Race Day.

Over 650 guests were welcomed to the pink themed day by event compere, Mary Kennedy and entertained to the sound of the George Hunter Jazz Quartet. Guests were treated to exquisite goody bags containing, among many things, specially commissioned Andre Ties and cufflinks; Clarins goodies; Jolie Champagne; boxed Champagne Flutes and Paul Costelloe candles.  BMW Ireland sponsored the raffle prize on the day offering one lucky winner, Mr Victor Buckley,  the chance to drive away in a 3 series convertible fully taxed and insured for a year.  After the last race, a lively auction took place, where guests bid on items such as “His and Hers designer Philip Stein watch set; Harvey Nichols extravagant day of indulgence; AIB 6 Nations Rugby Package; Golfing package to some of Ireland’s elite courses; trip to Lisbon for 7 nights and a helicopter escorted four ball to the K Club including lunch and wine –all of which were just a taste of the fantastic items on offer.

Among the guests on the day were former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds and his wife Kathleen,  Minister for Health & Children, Mary Harney TD, Mrs Ann Smurfit, Mrs Rosaleen O Kane; Mr Charles O Reilly Hyland and his beautiful wife Barbara;  along with AIB’s Eugene Sheehy and his wife Cora.

Michael Horgan, CEO of RCSI said “I was delighted to host such a worthwhile event and to raise such a phenomenal amount for our breast cancer research programme”.

Professor Arnold Hill remarked at the end of the evening that in addition to the fantastic amount raised from this single event, RCSI was also thrilled to announce the result of their recent nationwide raffle campaign, that concluded on Friday last, courtesy of Nissan Ireland, resulting in a combined staggering total amount of €1.1 million raised this weekend  for Breast Cancer Research.   The lucky winner of the Nissan Qashqai Jeep was Mrs Chris McEvoy of Portlaoise
