The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) is delighted to announce the election of Professor Frank B V Keane as President. Professor Keane took office yesterday following the College’s biennial Council Elections and replaces outgoing President Professor Gerald C O’Sullivan. Ms. Eilis McGovern, a cardio-thoracic surgeon at St. James Hospital, Dublin has been appointed as the new vice-president of RCSI, the first female ever to be elected to the position.

A graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, Professor Keane has been a Consultant in General and Colorectal Surgery at the Adelaide and Meath Hospital, incorporating the National Childrens Hospital (AMNCH), Tallaght, Dublin since 1982. A distinguished clinician and academic, he is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and has authored and co-authored over 100 research papers.

His predominant interest throughout his career has been gastrointestinal surgery and in particular the development of minimally invasive techniques. His unit remains the only place in Ireland where Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEMS) is available, a minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of rectal tumors. As well as his career in surgery, Professor Keane has been involved in undergraduate teaching, post-graduate surgical education and curriculum development for many years.

Speaking on his new appointment, Professor Keane said “I am delighted and honoured to be elected as President of RCSI and I look forward to the challenges and opportunites that lie ahead.”

Following the elections today two new members have been elected to Council; Professor P. Ronan O’Connell, Professor of Surgery at St. Vincents University Hospital and Mr. Michael J. Earley, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and the Childrens University Hospital , Temple Street . The new Council comprises the following
