The final of the 2007 Engineers Ireland Biomedical Research Medal was held yesterday evening in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). This award is made annually by Engineers Ireland to a final year PhD student who has been judged by a select committee to be making a significant contribution to the field of biomedical engineering research.

The four finalists were selected on the basis of a research paper which was submitted to the Division of Biomedical Engineering of Engineer’s Ireland in March. Professor Don P. Giddens who is Dean of the College of Engineering in Georgia Institute of Technology presented this years Medal and Honorarium to Niamh Nowlan and gave a short lecture on his work and experiences in the field of biomedical engineering. To add to the RCSI connection, Mr. Matthew Haugh, a PhD student in the Dept. of Anatomy was selected as one of this years finalists.
