‘Lessons in Leadership' explored at RCSI Institute of Leadership Lecture Series

18 October 2012

'Lessons in Leadership' were explored this evening at a lecture given by Professor Ciaran O'Boyle, Director of the RCSI Institute of Leadership in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) to more than 100 health professionals. The lecture reviewed the theory and practice of leadership, drawing on modern research findings showing that most people can develop leadership skills.

‘Leadership has always been more difficult in challenging times, but the unique stressors facing organisations in today's increasingly complex world, call for a renewed focus on what constitutes genuine leadership. Given the range of challenges facing public, private and even volunteer organizations, leadership is now required more than ever as new political and financial challenges, technologies, market demands, and competition emerge', said Professor Ciaran O'Boyle, Director of the RCSI Institute of Leadership.

Current challenges have brought about a renewed focus on restoring confidence, hope, and optimism; being able to rapidly bounce back from catastrophic events and display resiliency; helping people in their search for meaning and connection by fostering a new self-awareness; and genuinely relating to all stakeholders.

Prof O'Boyle continued, ‘We need, not only to develop effective leaders at the top, but also to develop leadership throughout our organisations. The successful leaders of tomorrow will be authentic, resourceful and purposeful. They will be driven by enduring values and will be men and women who have developed their cognitive, emotional and spiritual intelligence to the point where they can lead with integrity and display the resilience to endure in the face of challenge.'

‘In an increasingly knowledge-based economy, the leaders of the future will understand the importance of recruiting, developing and retaining talented people, developing complex social networks and building enduring organizations', said Prof O'Boyle.

Professor Ciaran O'Boyle is Director of the RCSI Institute of Leadership and a Professor in Psychology. The RCSI Institute of Leadership is Ireland's only third level institution dedicated exclusively to developing the leadership and management capacity of health professionals. The Institute has campuses in Dublin, Bahrain & Dubai and it also deliver programmes in Abu Dhabi, Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
