Basic Surgical Training

The National Basic Surgical Training (BST) is a foundation programme for trainees who have completed their internship and wish to pursue a career in surgery.

BST introduces trainees to the principles of surgery in general and has a core curriculum which is undertaken by all trainees irrespective of their future specialty aspirations. BST involves rotating through hospitals at six-monthly intervals (SHO) which are structured in accordance with the regulations for the award of the Certificate of Completion of Basic Surgical Training (CCBST).

Applications for the Basic Surgical Training Programme July 2013 intake are now closed.

Please note that all applicants to the BST Programme must be eligible for Registration in the Trainee Division of the Irish Medical Council. Applicants are required to provide either an up to date certified copy of their Medical Council certificate or a letter from the Medical Council confirming their eligibility for the Trainee Division.

Important - Please note that as all BST Training posts are currently under review some posts may be removed from the BST year one rotations over the coming months and replaced with other approved posts. In the event that posts to which you are initially matched are subsequently removed from the programme we will endeavour to place you in a rotation as close as possible to your original rotation.

Application and interview scores will not be available until after the intake process has completed (30th April).  Applicants may request their score, by submitting a request by email to bst@rcsi.ie.  Scores will be disclosed upon email request only.  Please note only the total score will be given.
