“This year's university climbing competition was hosted by Cork Institute of Technology, held in their newly opened Awesome Wall facility. College IV’s was established for college climbers to get together, not only for them to compete and prove their worth, but also for them to socialise with like-minded peers.

Climbing which was once considered an extreme and niche sport has become one of the fastest growing sports in Ireland, year in year out, the number of climbers has been steadily raising, and this year IVs featured over a 150 competitors between the male and female category.

It was a great weekend overall, and not a dull moment in sight, be it indulging in a doner kebab, sushi dinner, satisfying my sweet tooth or just walking through the English market

But back to the competition, Aoife Bourke, may have been away for the past 6 months however she made a spectacular return securing 3rd place the first day in the female advance category. There was stiff competition with only 2 points separating 2nd, 3rd & 4th place. Day 2 started very well, Aoife led her initial 2 routes to perfection, however during the final climb Elizebeth Robnet of UCC managed to grab two holds higher than our own Aoife, pushing her to 3rd place and Aoife to 4th.

Yours truly, wasn’t too shabby as well, and has moved few ranks from last year, however this year male advance category was rather fierce, with both TCD & UCC top climbers finishing with perfect score for 1st and 2nd place.

Our beginners also held their own with Mahdi Al-Shoyokh securing 12 spots. The rest if the team also did us proud, so a quick shout to Kevin Armstrong, Nicholas Lam, Ruadhan O'Loai, & Echinn Mac.”
