GEM 1 Student Hojabr Kakavand took part in the Dutch Open this weekend.

With 1,300 other competitors in attendance, Hojabr was dusting off the cobwebs after an 18 month hiatus, we look forward to following his progress in Belgium next weekend.

"The 44th Dutch Open is a prestigious Taekwondo competition that draws the best from around the world including world and Olympic champions looking to gain valuable ranking points for Olympic selection to the Tokyo 2020 games. Having taken 18 months out from international competitions, I controlled the fight well for the majority but minor slips meant that I ultimately lost to my (much taller) opponent in the opening (round of 32) match. A great learning experience going into the Belgium open next week. I'm grateful to be training with the Irish National team coach, Robert Taaffe in Tallaght with current world number 2 at South Dublin Taekwondo. The challenges ahead are exciting and I thank RCSI for supporting me in my pursuits." - Hojabr Kakavand
