RCSI Research Institute

Welcome to the RCSI Research Institute website. The Institute’s mission is to integrate basic and clinical research, so that advances in medical science are translated as quickly as possible into patient treatments. This is achieved by bringing together basic and clinical researchers from various collaborating institutions to share the advanced facilities

The RCSI Research Institute is a multi-site research infrastructure encompassing the research activities of RCSI at the St Stephen’s Green campus and the RCSI-Education and Research Centre (ERC) at Beaumont Hospital .

The research activities of RCSI Research Institute are sustained by an integrated research infrastructure consisting of a network of research centres and core facilities in peptide synthesis and labelling, solid phase chemistry, mass spectrometry, proteomics, clinical research and biobanking, molecular, live cellular and human imaging.

Through this infrastructure of labs, core technology platforms and staff, the RCSI Research Institute aims to facilitate and develop sustainable research programmes in translational research in the areas of Neuroscience, Cancer Cell Biology and Genetics, Vascular Biology, Imaging and Molecular Medicine, Population Health, Bio-Engineering, Infection and Immunity. The Clinical Research Centre (CRC) at Beaumont Hospital , which combines dedicated research beds and laboratories equiped for cell and molecular biology, enables an integrated bench-to-bedside approach to biomedical research.

The informing principle of RCSI’s research strategy is the promotion of Translational Medical Research - “Bench research informed by bedside problems, translated into diagnosis and treatment and into the community”.

Since 2006 the College made significant investments to implement its research strategy through the appointment of 3 new Research Chairs (Cancer Genetics, Neurodegeneration and Translational Medicine) and 2 Biomedical Research Lectureships.

RCSI has formed strategic partnerships with other medical and educational institutions to develop effective translational research programmes. A unique partnership with the Children’s Research Centre (CRC) at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin (OLCHC) will make a major contribution to childhood cancer research in Ireland . The CRC has allocated €5 million for the development of a research programme into solid tumour cancer genetics to be directed by the new Chair of Cancer Genetics at RCSI. Since 2004, RCSI is an equal partner in the Dublin Molecular Medicine Centre (DMMC) which represents a highly focused research partnership in the life sciences between the University College Dublin (UCD), Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI).

A strategic research partnership with Trinity College Dublin (TCD) concerns medical and biomedical research and training programmes in areas such as neuroscience, obstetrics, systems biology, clinical trials and drug discovery.

In 2006 RCSI officially opened the School of Postgraduate Studies which promotes and co-ordinates postgraduate and postdoctoral research training initiatives. The school, set up in recognition of the importance of postgraduate research training, will cater for up to 400 students. One of the key objectives of the School is to expand the existing MRes/PhD Programme in Biomedical Sciences college-wide. This programme, established in 2001, with HEA funding, provided a structured approach to postgraduate training which involved relevant taught modules in the 1st year, as well as providing opportunities to postgraduates to opt for PhD projects and supervisors of their choice. It also provides professional development opportunities for post-doctoral researchers.

In 2007, RCSI was successful in securing research funding for 2 HRB training sites (€5M award per site) in Diagnostics and Therapeutics for Human Disease and Integrated Healthcare: from Research to Policy and Practice.
