September 2008: Best Conference Paper Award

Dr Paul Burns, a MCh student in the Dept. of Anatomy supervised by Fergal O'Brien was awarded Gold Medal for best paper at the 49th Meeting of the Irish Otolaryngology /Head and Neck Society which was held in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland. His paper was entitled: 'In vivo response of a tissue engineered bone graft produced using collagen-glycosaminoglycan and hydroxyapatite scaffolds'.

August 2008: Successful Grant Award

Fergal O'Brien and John Gleeson were successful in a Enterprise Ireland Proof of Concept Phase Grant. The title of the grant is 'Novel osteoinductive composite scaffolds for BMP delivery for bone tissue repair'. Total value of award is €84,679.

June 2008: PhD Conferring

Dr. Orlaith Brennan graduated from RCSI with her PhD which was carried out under the supervision of Fergal O'Brien. Her project was entitled: 'Bone quality and its relationship with bone fragility and osteoporosis'

May 2008: Fulbright Scholarship Awards

Oran Kennedy, a former PhD student in the Group has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for 2008-09. The Fulbright Commission awards scholarships to Irish citizens to study and research in the United States and to US citizens to study and research in Ireland and continues to contribute to on-going dialogue and collaboration between Ireland and the United States. Oran will carry out postdoctoral research in bone mechanobiology and osteoporosis at the laboratory of Prof. Mitch Schaffler at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in NYC.

April 2008: Successful Grant Awards

Clive Lee and Fergal O'Brien and were both involved on successful Science Foundation Ireland, Research Frontiers Grant applications. The title of the proposals were:
(i) 'How Does Bone Detect Cracks and Repair Them.' Prof. David Taylor from the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering in TCD was was the Principal Investigator and Clive was a co-applicant. (ii) 'Molecular mechanisms underlying staphylococcal induced osteomyelitis'. Dr. Steve Kerrigan from MCT in RCSI was was the Principal Investigator and Fergal was a co-applicant. ' Total value of the award: €186,600.

April 2008: Best Conference Paper Award

Grainne Cunniffe, a PhD student in the Group supervised by Fergal O'Brien, was awarded 2nd prize for best student oral presentation at the Northern Ireland Bioengineering Society Spring Meeting 2008. Her paper was entitled: 'Investigation of a nanoHA - collagen composite scaffold '.

February 2008: PhD Conferring

Dr. Oran Kennedy graduated from TCD with his PhD which was carried out under the supervision of Fergal O'Brien and Clive Lee in partnership with David Taylor from the Trinity Centre for Bioengineering. His project was entitled: 'The effect of bone turnover on bone quality and material properties'.

January 2008: Best Conference Paper Award

Claire Tierney, a PhD student in the Group supervised by Fergal O'Brien, was awarded joint 1st prize for best paper in the mature research category at the 14th Annual Conference of the Section of Bioengineering of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland which was held in Sligo over the weekend of January 25 & 26. Her paper was entitled: 'Optimisation of collagen-GAG scaffold for use in bone tissue engineering' .
