December 2004: Successful Equipment Grant Award

The Group was recently successful in a Health Research Board, Additional Equipment Funding grant . The successful applicants were: Fergal O'Brien (Principal Investigator), Clive Lee and Sue Rackard (Lecturer in Veterinary Surgery, UCD). The funding will be used to purchase an automatic tissue processor for histology applications. Total value of award is €27,528.

October 2004: Research Award

Fergal O'Brien was awarded a SFI President of Ireland Young Researcher Award, officially announced on 13th October 2004. This award is Science Foundation Ireland's most prestigious award for young researchers from around the world to carry out their research in third level institutions in Ireland. The award was presented at a ceremony in Aras an Uachtarain by the President of Ireland, Mrs. Mary McAleese. The funding (€1.1 million) will be used to set up a laboratory for bone tissue engineering in RCSI and will lead to the hiring of up to 8 researchers over 5 years.

September 2004: Best Conference Paper Award

Oran Kennedy was awarded 1st prize for best oral presentation in the biological sciences at the Microscopical Society of Ireland Annual Conferece which was held in Trinity College Dublin. His paper was entitled: 'Bone for life: osteoporosis, bone quality, microcracks and remodelling'.

June 2004: Successful Grant Award

The Group was recently successful in a Health Research Board, Basic Research Grant application. The successful applicants were: Fergal O'Brien (Principal Investigator), Clive Lee and Sue Rackard (Lecturer in Veterinary Surgery, UCD). The title of the proposal was 'The Role of Microcracks in Targeted Bone Remodeling and Their Relationship with Bone Fragility and Osteoporosis'. Total value of award is €112,800.
