Dr Teddy Returns to RCSI for the 2nd Annual Teddy Bear Hospital

09 February 2016

On Saturday, the 30th of January, RCSI Paediatrics Society hosted its 2nd Annual Teddy Bear Hospital in RCSI St. Stephen’s Green in aid of BUMBLEance, The Children's National Ambulance Service. RCSI opened its doors to over 75 children, teddies and their parents, making this their most successful event to date. This free event promised lots of cheer for young children by educating them about health and well-being in a fun, interactive environment. Many children view hospitals as scary places so this event was created with the aim of teaching children about what a hospital is, who works at a hospital, what goes on there and most importantly, how to stay well.

The children, aged 4-10, helped the 40 RCSI student volunteers triage, examine, diagnose and treat their precious teddies. Many teddies arrived with a variety of problems including broken legs, asthma, ear infections and even a cardiac arrest! Thankfully all teddies were well cared for and sent home with a new lease on life thanks to our quick fix sewing team.

All of our participants rotated through the six stations of the hospital created to mirror aspects of a real hospital. This ranged from a triage station to an X-ray and MRI station and even to a surgical station. Children engaged with volunteers while playing the “Healthy vs. Unhealthy Food” game promoting healthy eating and exercise. The arts & crafts station allowed the children to make cards for sick children being transported by BUMBLEance. Face painters even helped ease a few worries for some of the more nervous teddy parents.

The event was a success for all involved! The Teddy Bear Hospital would not have been possible without the help and support of Student Services, RCSI Photography Society and local event sponsors – including Starbucks, Fyffes Ireland, Tipperary Water, Keelings, Wild Orchard smoothies, HARIBO Ireland, Johnnie Cupcakes, Chopped RAW in Stephen’s Green, Accents Coffee & Tea, Dubray Books, Irish Popcorn & Snackfood Co. Ltd., Cogs the Brain Shop, and C&C Gleeson. All involved are exceptionally grateful for the participation of our community sponsors that helped transform the event into something extraordinary!
