Third Level Activities

RCSI Undergraduate Research Summer Studentships

This programme provides a unique education experience over the summer months for our young talented students (RCSI, Medical University of Bahrain & Penang Medical College, Malaysia only). Our students are encouraged to gain hands-on experience of the challenges that come with conducting research work under the guidance of RCSI clinicians and scientists. The student’s summer research is presented at Research Day (see below). There are a series of undergraduate student research workshops & journal clubs run over the summer months to enhance their research experience. For further details and applications RCSI students should look at this website.

RCSI Summer Programme in Undergraduate Research (SPUR)

SPUR 2008 will be the fourth SPUR programme co-ordinated by Prof Jochen Prehn & Dr Brona Murphy at RCSI. SPUR participants (Irish and international applicants welcome) will take part in cutting edge biomedical research focusing on the mechanisms underlying human disease and its treatment. Students will also take part in a programme of science and social activities including journal club, workshops, and social events. The end of the programme will culminate in a "mini-symposium" where participants will prepare an abstract and present the fruits of their labour to the College as an oral presentation. For further details please see the SPUR website.

Images of Science Competition

This year we ran an Images of Science Competition sponsored by Medical Supply Company. The overall winner won €1,500 towards a laptop or digital camera of their choice. The runners up won a mounted canvas print of their entered image. The standard of entries was very high and the competition fierce, our four judges had a hard time determining which were their favourites. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who entered and to congratulate our overall winner and our 11 runners up. These 12 winning images will be incorporated into a Research Wall Planner that will be distributed to all researchers interested shortly. Research Day

RCSI annually hosts Research Day where all research staff and students alike partake in presenting their work to the rest of the college either orally or by poster. During the poster sessions we permit a limited number of company stands in the same area as the posters and in this way the staff & students can interact with the companies directly. Last year several projects were reported in various Irish newspapers. Media or companies interested in attending Research Day 2009 please contact us at outreach@rcsi.ie.

This years Research Day saw student & researcher projects getting a lot of interest from Ireland’s media.
