Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery
The Department of Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery was established in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1991. The Abraham Colles Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery is Professor John M. O’Byrne. The Professorial Unit is based at Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital, Finglas, Dublin 11. The primary objective of the department is the provision of undergraduate medical student education and to oversee postgraduate research in orthopaedic and trauma surgery and related scientific disciplines. Undergratuate teaching takes place at Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital with Intermediate Cycle RCSI students undergoing a two-week intensive Musculo-Skeletal Teaching Module that encompasses the essentials of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery. This is a hands-on course with one-to-one teaching on clinical examination technique. Students additionally attend Dublin City University (DCU) for dedicated Sports and Exercise Medicine teaching sessions. The Abraham Colles Medal is awarded to the best overall student at the end of each academic year. The department has a strong research ethos with emphasis on both basic science and clinical research. Current research focuses on the genetic mechanisms of bone disease and the biomechanics of joint disease. Research fellows are based in the General Clinical Research Unit at the Mater University Hospital, The Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at Dublin City University and The Department of Mechanical Engineering Trinity College Dublin.
