Short History of FSEMA Working Group of interested parties representative of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and other interested parties had been meeting for several years with the objective of forming a joint Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine of the two Colleges. In September 2001, advertisements were placed in the medical press inviting medical practitioners wishing to pursue Sports and Exercise Medicine as a career choice to apply for Foundation Fellowship or Membership. Approximately 200 applications were received. The Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, Dr John O'Donoghue was the guest speaker at the Launch of the Faculty on the evening of 19th September 2002 The Aims and Objectives of the Faculty are set out in the Standing Orders. The Faculty now has almost 500 Fellows and Members, in Ireland and Overseas. Specialty Recognition: In May 2004 the Faculty was recognised as body in the State for the purpose of granting evidence of satisfactory completion of specialist training in Sports and Exercise Medicine.
