Our facilitators
The Faculty’s programmes are designed, developed and facilitated in collaboration with clinical and subject matter experts.
In recognition of their clinical and educational expertise, many of our facilitators, have been appointed as Honorary Teaching, Clinical and Research Associates of the Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery, RCSI.
All of the clinically focused programmes are facilitated by experienced, clinically-based registered nurses, midwives, clinical nurses specialists, registered advanced nurse practitioners and educators.

- Dr Catherine O’Neill
- PhD, M.Soc. Sc., DipSSR., MA, BA (Hons) RGN, FFNMRCSI
Dr Catherine O'Neill has been teaching, researching and facilitating ethical discussion of healthcare issues for nurses and other healthcare professions since the early 1990s. She is the author of many resources relating to ethics for nurses and her areas of research have also focused on ethical issues. Two of the most notable are the End-of-Life Framework (2011) and her PhD thesis, which was an Ethnography of Treatment Decisions in the Care of Older People in Irish Hospitals (2012). Catherine's most recent ethical research focused on Nurses Care Practices at the end of life in ICUs in Bahrain (2016).

- Dr Mark White
- RGN, MSc, MBS, PhD
Dr Mark White is a Director of Nursing and Midwifery, Planning and Development. Previously, he was the national lead for Productive Ward from 2010-2015 and has led extensive research and publication with the quality improvement initiative. He is currently on secondment as a programme manager with a large portfolio of change projects in the Director General of the HSE’s office.

- Ms Suzanne Crowley
- RANP, RNP, RCN, RNID, MSc (Hons), BSc, H Dip (Children’s Nursing), Certificate in Nursing (Intellectual Disability)
Suzanne Crowley is a Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner in children’s epilepsy, and has been employed in TSCUH since 1999. Suzanne is also a Registered Nurse Prescriber and children’s and intellectual disability nurse. Suzanne completed her BSc and MSc (Hons) in Advanced Practice in the RCSI. She was awarded a Fellowship (by examination) of the Faculty & Nursing Midwifery of RCSI in 2016.

- Mr Martin Duignan
- FFNMRCSI, MSc (Sport Medicine, Exercise & Health), MSc (Nursing) BSc, H.Dip (ED), Dip (Mgt), RGN, RANP, RNP Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner (Emergency), Honorary Clinical Associate, Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery, RCSI
Martin Duignan has an impressive academic and publication record and contributes regularly to the international nursing literature with more than a dozen publications on a range of clinical topics. He has presented nationally and internationally at nursing and multi-disciplinary conferences. He has a particular focus on the utility of exercise to promote health.

- Ms Joanne O’ Brien
- MSc, BSc (Hons), RANP, RNP, RGN, FFNMRCSI
Joanne O'Brien works as a Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Pain Management at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, managing patients with both acute and chronic pain. Her main research interests are Capsaicin 8% for the management of neuropathic pain and she is the President Elect of the Irish Pain Society.

- Mr Ciaran Lanigan
- RPN, RNP, BSc, PG Dip, MSc, FFNRCSI
Ciaran Lanigan works as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in West Dublin. He is a nurse prescriber for past three years and regularly lectures in RCSI. He is involved in a number of wellness issues for clients around exercise and self care.

- Ms Mary Costello
- RGN, RNP, MSc (Adv Practice), BSc (Hons), H Dip Tissue Viability, Certified Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapist, PhD Scholar
Mary Costello is a Tissue Viability Nurse in the Laois/Offaly PHN Service. In 2013, Mary commenced an MScN in Advanced Practice in RCSI and completed a systematic review on the role of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) in the treatment of lower limb lymphoedema. Subsequent to this she became certified as an MLD Therapist and has established a Lymphoedema clinic in the Midlands. Mary is a PhD Scholar of RCSI at present.

- Ms Fiona T. Jacob
- RGN, BSN, PG Dip (Coronary Care), MSN, RNT, FFNMRCSI
Fiona Jacob is an Education Coordinator at Beaumont Hospital since 2007. She trained as a registered nurse in St Vincent’s Hospital. She is a UMASS graduate with an honours degree in nursing (UMASS, Amherst, USA, 2000), a Masters Degree in Nursing (RCSI, 2009), and a Post Graduate Diploma in Health Science Education (Trinity College, 2011). As a registered nurse she has a background in critical care and coronary care nursing.

- Mr Joseph Morris
- RGN, BSc. Nurse Management, PG Dip (Gerontological Nursing), MSc. Healthcare Ethics and Law
Joseph Morris is the Education Coordinator for Gerontological Nursing in Beaumont Hospital since 2015. He trained as a registered general nurse in Beaumont Hospital graduating in 2001. Since then Joseph has held a number of positions in Beaumont Hospital all relating to care of the elderly (CNS Gerontological Nursing, CNM 2 Specialist Geriatric Ward, CNM 3 Residential Care).

- Mr Derek Cribbin
- PG Dip (Critical Care), MSc (Healthcare Management)
Derek Cribbin is the Nurse Lead for the National Critical Care Programme and Chairperson of the Irish Association of Critical Care Nurses (IACCN). Following nurse training in London and extensive travelling, Derek returned to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown in 2004, progressing to CNM 3 in Critical Care. His achievements included the initiation of an RCSI HG Foundation Course in Critical Care Nursing delivered collaboratively with OLOL Drogheda and Beaumont Hospital. This course will be delivered nationally with level 8 accreditation from Q3 2017. He was also a key part of the introduction of a Therapeutic Hypothermia for out of hospital cardiac arrest patients programme in Connolly and Surge planning.

- Ms Julie Jordan O’Brien
- PG Dip Education, RNP, MSc Nursing, Higher Diploma (Wound Management & Tissue Viability). Higher Diploma (Intensive Care Nursing), ENB199 (Accident & Emergency Nursing), Diploma in Management, RGN.
Julie Jordan O'Brien is a Tissue Viability Clinical Nurse Specialist with a keen interest in all aspects of wound care including both acute and chronic wounds. Having completed her postgraduate diploma in Medical Education she enjoys teaching in the classroom and clinical arena. Julie is a council member of the (EWMA) European Wound Management Association and is involved in the conduct and publication of research.

- Ms Denise Gillespie
- MSc, BSc, H Dip Public Health Nursing, RGN, RM, RPHN, RANP
Denise Gillespie is a qualified nurse, midwife and public health nurse. She worked as a midwife before training and then working as an area public health nurse in Donegal prior to moving to her current role as a Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner in child health and parenting within public health nursing in Donegal. She is also qualified as a Marte Meo Therapist and Marte Meo Colleague trainer. Denise runs the pre-school children’s behaviour support clinic in Donegal which provides support to parents in the areas of sleep and behaviour. She is particularly interested in behavioural sleep difficulties in children.

- Mr Kevin Mulligan
- RPN, RSCN, H Dip (Neonatal Nursing), MSc (Clinical Practice)
After completing his Postgraduate Diploma in Sick Children’s Nursing, Kevin worked in the area of Neonatology and now has over 13 years experience in this area. Kevin is currently employed as a Neonatal Clinical Skills Facilitator in the National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street, Dublin. Kevin also delivers lectures in his specialist area to students in University College Dublin.

- Ms Sinead Lawlor
- H Dip Midwifery, H Dip Public Health Nursing, RGN RM RPHN
Sinead Lawlor is a PHN. Following nurse training, Sinead completed both a Higher Diploma in Midwifery (Coombe Hospital) and PHN training in conjunction with UCD. Sinead has a special interest in children’s sleep problems and runs a behavioural sleep problems clinic for preschool children in Kildare. Her training as a sleep practitioner was carried out in the Southampton Sleep Clinic in the UK and further training for sleep problems in children with disabilities with Interconnections in Birmingham. She is currently undertaking an MSc (Child Health and Wellbeing) in TCD. Sinead is a member of the Institute of Community Health Nursing and its Child and Family Health Sub Group.

- Ms Violet Hayes
- SRN, SCM, HV HDip, DN Cert, BSc Hons
Violet Hayes qualified as SRN, Health Visitor HDip and District Nurse following integrated training at Hammersmith Hospital, London and the University of Surrey. Violet initiated both health promoting schools and antenatal education in West Cork in addition to FETAC tutoring, she also developed and delivered the first training courses for home helps in the Southern Health Board and produced training for home-carers. In her role of DPHN West Cork, Violet developed and expanded primary care services – initiatives included men's health and prediabetes care. Violet has worked strategically reviewing National Homecare Services and has considerable experience in HR investigations. She is also s a Senior Adjunct Clinical Lecturer in UCC and was awarded the inaugural ICHN lifetime achievement award in 2016.

- Dr Mary Rose Day
- DN, MA, H.Dip PHN, BSc, Dip Mang (RCSI), Certificate Teaching (Harvard), RPHN, RM, RGN
Dr Mary Rose Day, is a nurse consultant with a specialist interest in public health nursing, and vulnerable adults and lectured at the School of Nursing & Midwifery in UCC. She is a reviewer and author of peer reviewed/non-peer reviewed journals, book chapters, reports and has presented nationally/internationally. She is a committee member of the All Ireland Gerontological Nurses Association (AIGNA) and member of the Institute of Community Health Nursing (ICHN) Mary Rose has co-edited a textbook Self-Neglect in Older Adults a Global, Evidence-Based Resource for Nurses and Other Healthcare. Providers’.

- Ms Emer Shanley
- RGN, PG Dip Tissue Viability and Wound Management, MSc Research, PhD Scholar
Emer Shanley has been working in wound care for the past 10 years, and was appointed Clinical Nurse Specialist (Tissue Viability) in West Cork Community Care in 2011. She completed her PG Dip Tissue Viability and Wound Management in 2011 followed by MSc (Research) in 2012 in RCSI. Emer was appointed as a Research Fellow in RCSI undertaking a Cochrane Systematic Review from 2013-2015 and is currently a PhD scholar in RCSI. She is Vice President of the Institute of Community and is also involved in the Wound Management Association of Ireland.

- Ms Aideen Walsh
- RGN, RCN, RNP, MSc Nurs (Adv Prac); BSc Nurs Mgt; Cert Nurs Pres; H Dip Nurs (Sick Children’s Nursing, Paediatric Emergency Nursing and SAFE)
Aideen Walsh has been Paediatric Forensic Medical Unit Coordinator in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin since February 2017. Prior to this, she worked as Clinical Nurse Specialist (Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner) in the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit in the Rotunda Hospital. She was in the first cohort of nurses to undertake the H. Dip in Sexual Assault Forensic Nursing in RCSI in 2008 and has remained passionate about continuing to expand this area of specialist care in paediatrics in OLCHC, where she had trained as RCN and worked in ED for nine years. Aideen is involved with interagency teaching and training with nurses, doctors, An Garda Síochána, Rape Crisis Network Ireland, Forensic Science Ireland and other support organisations involved in her specialist area of care.

- Ms Rosemary Masterson
- RGN, RNT, BNS, MSc (Nursing), ENB 219
Rosemary Masterson is a qualified RN and holds a qualification in Orthopaedic Nursing. She completed her BNS degree in UCD and her MSc in Nursing through the University of Manchester. Her clinical nursing experience includes general medicine, surgery and orthopaedic surgery in different settings. Currently, Rosemary works as a nurse tutor delivering the PG Dip Programme in Nursing (Orthopaedic Nursing) in conjunction with the School of Nursing RCSI, as well as in-service training, other education initiatives (National Orthopaedic Nurses Conference) and practice development. Other interests include involvement in the Irish Orthopaedic Interest group (IONs) and acting as book review editor on the IJOTN.

- Ms Eileen Shinners
- RGN, RNT, H Dip (Rheumatology), MSc (Nursing Education)
Eileen Shinners completed her nursing training in London before returning to Ireland in 1999 to Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services. She was awarded a Higher Diploma in Rheumatology Nursing in 2003; BSc Nursing in 2004 and MSc Nursing (Education) in 2009. Eileen worked in a variety of nursing roles, and more recently as a Nurse Tutor in Harold’s Cross and in Tullamore. Eileen has worked in a number of senior nursing roles opposite her time in Education including Practice Development and Acting Rheumatology CNS. She has extensive teaching experience on continuing professional development and university accredited courses (including online learning).
