RCSI MATTERS
facilitate the card writing. The initiative was a great success
with over 2,000 cards sent worldwide.
The Peripheral Accommodation service also underwent
significant changes during the year. In delivering on health
& safety responsibilities, over 30 accommodation suppliers
were part of a Fire & Safety audit. The office is currently
working with B&B's and apartment providers to ensure that
their accommodation meets the recommended standards in
addition to raising the bar on the quality of accommodation
provided. This will be an ongoing project for the office.
CHAPLAINCY & PASTORAL CARE
In the past 2 years over 60 members of staff have undertaken
foundation training as part of a Mindfulness in Medicine
initiative. The Pastoral Care and Chaplaincy Team were
delighted to welcome Dr. Saki Santorelli, University of
Massachusetts Medical School and the Centre for Stress
Reduction to RCSI where he delivered a talk on MBSR
(mindfulness based stress reduction). Dr Santorelli shared
insights from over 4 decades of research and experience
in delivering MBSR training in hospitals and as part of
medical education programmes. There are plans to deliver
a Mindfulness in Medicine programme to undergraduate
students in 2014.
This year a memorable and profound Interfaith Celebration
of Remembrance and Thanksgiving was held in March for
the families and loved ones of donors. The charitable and
humanitarian acts of donors were reflected on by students
and members of the Anatomy Department who honoured
donors as their first patients with blessings, songs and prayers
as a mark of gratitude and thanks.
Ongoing activities of the Pastoral Care and Chaplaincy Team
include weekly friendship lunches with the student body,
support activities for Nightline, Please Talk Suicide Awareness
Campaign and face to face listening support services for
students and staff.
Suffice to say, another successful year for the Student Services
Office with lots done and always more to do.
