RCSI MATTERS
To date, over 1,000 health professionals have graduated
from the institute and over 450 students are registered
annually on its MSc programmes with an equal number
taking the short development courses. With bases in Ireland,
Bahrain and Dubai, the Institute makes a major contribution
to the development of safe, effective, efficient and equitable
health services in Ireland, the Middle East and Sub-Saharan
Africa.
PROGRAMMES
The Institute offers Masters and postgraduate diploma
programmes in Healthcare Management, Leadership,
Quality and Patient Safety, Organisational Change and
in Health Professions Education. Degrees are accredited
by the National University of Ireland and are recognised
throughout the world. The academic programmes are
designed to be flexible in order to facilitate the working
lives of busy professionals. Programmes are part-time and
modular and are delivered using a blend of distance and
classroom education. The Institute also offers a range of
short courses in personal and professional development
and works with a number of professional training bodies to
provide programmes for the continuing education of health
professionals.
The Institute also collaborates with the Irish Hospice
Foundation to provide its MSc in Bereavement and its
Diploma in Children and Loss. These programmes are
growing in importance in a society where matters relating to
death and dying are increasingly avoided.
The past year has also seen an increasing demand for
Institute staff to provide consultancy in a variety of
areas including organisational design, risk management,
patient safety and human resources both in Ireland and
internationally.
STUDENTS
Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, scientists, allied health
professionals, researchers and administrators take the
Institute's courses. They work in hospitals, community-
based healthcare systems, NGOs, Government agencies,
academic and research institutions or pharmaceutical,
biotechnology and medical devices companies. They
are at early, middle or senior stages in their careers and
usually, but not always, have responsibility for managing
others. According to Dr Pauline Joyce, Director of
Academic Affairs: "Our typical student is proactive, open
to exploring new ways of learning and thinking, is keen to
learn from and share their experience with others, and is
motivated to develop themselves and their organisations
in order to improve the delivery of healthcare to patients."
PHILOSOPHY
The primary goal is to develop the leadership capabilities
of health professionals in order to improve healthcare
systems, thereby ultimately improving patient care.
Whereas leadership is difficult to teach, the Institute's
philosophy is that the conditions can be created in
which all students can learn to develop their leadership
capabilities.
Learning to lead at RCSI Institute of Leadership
The novelist George Elliot once said: "It's never too late to be what you might have
been". Many health professionals, although well-trained in their particular disciplines,
find themselves in positions of increasing responsibility and authority in an increasingly
complex world, without having had the opportunity to develop their leadership
and management competencies, writes Professor Ciaran O'Boyle, Director of the
Institute of Leadership. The Institute was founded in 2005 to address this need and is
Ireland's only third level institution dedicated exclusively to developing the leadership,
management and educational competencies of health professionals
