Department of Epidemiology and Public Health Medicine

Epidemiology and public health medicine are the science of preventing disease and promoting health. Both disciplines focus on society rather than the individual.

Epidemiologists study the determinants of the health status of populations, including groups of special interest such as the elderly, people in particular occupations etc. Clinical epidemiologists study the course of diseases and the factors that affect their outcome. Epidemiologists also provide advice and expertise on research design and statistics.

Public health medicine is the science of protecting and improving the health of communities through promotion of healthy lifestyles, research for disease and injury prevention and detection and control of infectious diseases. Public health specialists inform and evaluate population health approaches for achieving public health goals.
