Wound Assessment and Management

This CPD programme provides registered nurses and midwives with knowledge and a critical understanding of the epidemiology, aetiology, anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of wound healing. The content will also explore the factors influencing wound healing, wound assessment, dressing selection and the nurse’s professional responsibility and scope of practice in relation to the assessment and management of wounds.

Programme aims

  • To provide registered nurses and midwives with up-to-date, evidenced-based knowledge to critically develop nurses’ theoretical and practical understanding of wound assessment and management.
  • To support registered nurses and midwives in enhancing their confidence, skills and competences, with regard to caring for patients/service users and their families who are affected by wound(s).

Learning outcomes

At the end of this CPD programme, participants will be able to:

  • Critically discuss the anatomy and physiology of wound management.
  • Critically analyse the factors influencing wound healing.
  • Critically discuss the differences between acute and chronic wounds.
  • Critically discuss and implement a holistic assessment of individuals with wounds.
  • Critically discuss the current modalities of different types of dressing and their application.
