Ethical Values in Older Person Care

This CPD programme is designed to refresh the foundational theories of ethics and ethical principles and critically discuss how relevant these theories and principles are in current practice particularly in care of the older person. It is hoped that the programme content and discussions will be a reflective process resulting in practitioners feeling confident to have their professional voices heard when ethical issues and ethical decision making arises in their area of practice.

Programme aims

  • To provide registered nurses and midwives with up-to-date, evidenced based knowledge to critically develop nurses’ theoretical and practical understanding of ethical issues. ethical decision making and of how these may shape their professional practice, in older person care.
  • To revisit the moral principles and concepts which are the basis of ethical decision making in healthcare ethics.
  • To support registered nurses and midwives by enhancing their confidence, skills and competences, with regard to articulating their viewpoint and knowledge of the patient in the practice area when ethical dilemmas arise.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this CPD programme, participants will be able to:

  • Critically discuss the meaning of an ethical dilemma.
  • Critically discuss ethical theory and ethical principles and its application in older person care.
  • Critically discuss patient care issues involving concepts such as patient autonomy/competence/consent/nurse advocacy in relation to the nurse’s role in resolving an ethical dilemma.
  • Critically discuss end-of-life issues in patient care in older person care.
  • Critically discuss an ethic of care model in older person care.
