Introduction to Cardiac Rhythms and ECG Interpretation

The cardiac patient may present with a wide variety of arrhythmias that require urgent attention and management. This one day programme provides registered nurses and midwives, in all clinical areas, with evidenced based knowledge to critically develop their theoretical and practical understanding of rhythm analysis and ECG interpretation. The programme is designed to facilitate staff to provide optimal evidenced based care to patients.

Programme aims

  • To provide registered nurses and midwives with up-to-date, evidenced based knowledge to critically develop nurses’ theoretical and practical understanding of an introduction to selected cardiac rhythms /ECG interpretation of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and interventions available. 
  • To support registered nurses and midwives in enhancing their confidence, skills and competences, with regard to rhythm analysis and ECG interpretation.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this CPD programme, participants will be able to:
  • Critically discuss the anatomy and physiology of the cardiac system.
  • Critically discuss the principles of cardiac electrical physiology.
  • Critically discuss PQRST wave forms.
  • Critically discuss the principles of rhythm analysis and demonstrate a systematic approach to this.
  • Critically discuss the principles of ECG interpretation and demonstrate a systematic approach to the interpretation of ECGs.
