Professional Certificate in Care of the Older Person in a Residential/Nursing Home Setting

Programme overview:

Older persons often have complex health needs, which require nurses to apply a holistic, person centred approach to assessment, planning and care delivery. The overall aim of this programme is to provide the student with knowledge of the specific skills required to care for older people in residential/nursing home settings. This programme focuses on providing the student with an awareness of the many issues and nursing challenges relating to older people requiring residential/nursing home care.

This programme will develop the professional and clinical skills of the student, which is designed to lead to professional nurses who are safe, caring, competent decision makers willing to accept personal and professional accountability for evidence based practice. Today practicing nurses are expected to be flexible, adaptable and reflective practitioners, members of the multi-disciplinary team and capable of adopting a lifelong approach to learning.

Learning outcomes/aims:

  • Provide students with a knowledge base appropriate to NQAI level 8 learning.
  • Develop the students as reflective practitioners with the skills of analysis, critical thinking and problem solving to identify, influence, implement and evaluate evidence-based practice. 
  • Develop the student's ability to link evidence-based knowledge to clinical practice within their specialist area.
  • Develop the student's confidence in taking a leading role as an effective member of the healthcare team and participating in the multidisciplinary team approach to care delivery within care of the older person in a residential/nursing home setting.

Programme structure:
This is a six-month programme which runs in one semester encompassing three modules.
