PhD: Prof. Fergal O'Brien - Advanced scaffold based delivery system for nucleic acids through the incorporation of novel nanoparticles

The aim of this project is to develop novel collagen-based scaffolds functionalised for the delivery of RNA-based therapeutics using nanoparticles recently developed by researchers in the SFI-funded CÚRAM and AMBER centres. The scaffolds will be used as novel platforms for tissue regeneration, in vitro disease modelling, and to study drug development/delivery.

Project description

Primarily based in the TERG and AMBER Centre at RCSI, the researcher will work closely with Prof. O’Driscoll’s team in the CÚRAM centre at UCC where the he/she will spend significant time.The student will work closely with other members of a large multidisciplinary project team including PIs, clinicians, postdoctoral and postgraduate researchers.

Ideal applicants will have a 1st Class Honours Bachelor’s degree and/or MSc degree (with 2.1 honours from primary degree) in biomedical engineering, materials science, regenerative medicine, pharmacy or related disciplines. Excellent written and oral communication skills desired.

Specific skills which would enhance a candidate’s application might include experience in some of the following areas: scaffolds in tissue engineering, nanoparticle formulation and characterisation, drug delivery, cell culture, histological techniques and molecular biology experience.
