Funded PhD in Polymer Chemistry and Bioengineering

Project: Development of novel polypeptide materials for applications in bioengineering

Project title

Development of novel polypeptide materials for applications in bioengineering

Project description

Applications are invited for this funded position in polymer chemistry and bioengineering research to be carried out under the supervision of Profs. Cryan, Heise & O’Brien. This project will focus on the design, synthesis and development of functional polypeptides as (nano)medical devices and as bioinks for tissue engineering and biotherapeutics delivery.

The research therefore will be based on strong links between polymer chemistry, materials science, pharmaceutical sciences, additive manufacturing/3D PRINT and biological performance and clinical need. The researcher will work closely with other members of a multidisciplinary project team including PIs, clinicians, postdoctoral and postgraduate researchers in the Polymer Research Group in the Dept of Chemistry in RCSI and the Drug Delivery and Advanced Materials Team within the RCSI Tissue Engineering Research Group (http://www.rcsi.ie/tissueengineering). The student will be provided with a well-supported environment including; a multidisciplinary supervisory team, access to taught post-graduate courses and an opportunity to work closely with industry partners.

The ideal applicant will have a 1st Class Honours Bachelor’s degree or MSc degree (with minimum 2.1 honours from primary degree) in synthetic chemistry, pharmaceutical or medicinal chemistry, pharmacy or related disciplines. Specific skills which would enhance a candidate’s application include experience in some of the following areas: polymer chemistry, materials science, cell culture and 3D PRINT. Excellent written and oral communication skills are also desired.

  • Research theme: Bioengineering, polymer chemistry
  • Keyword: Nanomedicine, drug delivery, tissue engineering, 3D printing

Application process

To apply, please submit a CV and cover letter with the names and addresses of three referees to Prof. Sally-Ann Cryan (SCryan@rcsi.ie), School of Pharmacy, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. For information on moving to Ireland please see http://euraxess.ie/.

The closing date for receipt of applications is 5.00 pm on Monday 21st September 2018. Only short-listed applications will be acknowledged.
