Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland Coláiste Ríoga na Máinleá in Éirinn

Division of Biology

The Division of Biology is part of the Department of Anatomy.

The teaching of Biology in the College, in the guise of Botany, goes back almost to its foundation.  In 1792 the distinguished Irish botanist Walter Wade applied to give a course of lectures entitled "Botany and Vegetation", he subsequently became the honorary Professor of Botany.  In the late 19th century Zoology was added to the curriculum and in the mid 20th century, the life science course, now titled Biology, joined the other two Pre-Medical subjects of Chemistry and Physics.

In the new millennium it was clear a more cohesive Pre-Medical year was required and so in 2005 a new integrated and modularised Foundation Year course was launched with Biology at its core.
